Hidden within Zaandam, the Zaanlands Lyceum whispers tales of education and rebellion. The Zaanlands Lyceum isn’t just any school. It’s the oldest secondary school in the Zaanstreek, established in 1866. Originally named HBS, it evolved into the Zaanlands Lyceum in 1920. The school offers havo, atheneum, and gymnasium level education, known for its open climate and strong student-teacher relationships. Imagine the year 1962. A cold March day. Students gathered outside, shivering not just from the cold, but from an unexpected thrill. The school’s heating system had malfunctioned due to a gas outage. Instead of heading inside, a few bold students started to wander off, and soon, a large group followed. This wasn’t planned. This wasn’t organized. It was a spontaneous student strike. Over a hundred students, caught in the wave of excitement, roamed the streets of Zaandam. They even dared to enter a local Albert Heijn supermarket before being ushered out by the surprised manager. Their youthful energy echoed with chants and the school’s yell, “Zette Zette Zette Elle Elle Elle Veeë Veeë Veeë Zet-El-Vee Zaandam!”. Their adventure ended at the Donaupont, a ferry crossing the Noordzeekanaal. News of the “stakinkje,” as the local paper called it, spread quickly. The students faced a mass punishment. The school had cleverly confiscated their bags, easily identifying the participants. On Friday afternoon, all 119 students gathered for their punishment. The Zaanlands Lyceum carries this story, a testament to youthful spontaneity and the enduring spirit of its students. It’s a place where history blends with modern education. The school even has its own clothing line, various student clubs, and even offers programs for advanced learners.
