Slipping through time, let’s find ourselves in 1837 Amsterdam. Excitement crackled in the air. The Hollandsche IJzeren Spoorweg-Maatschappij (HIJSM), the first Dutch railway company, was born. This marked the beginning of a railway revolution in the Netherlands. Fast forward to 1839, and we stand before the Spoorbrug HIJSM, witnessing the inaugural journey of the “Arend” locomotive. This iron horse, chugging along the newly laid tracks from Amsterdam to Haarlem, was a marvel of the age. The Spoorbrug HIJSM was a vital part of this pioneering route, known as the “Oude Lijn” or Old Line. Initially, the tracks, including those on the Spoorbrug HIJSM, were built to a broad gauge of 1945 mm. Imagine the rumble of those broad-gauge trains crossing the Spoorbrug HIJSM! However, by 1866, the tracks were converted to the standard gauge of 1435 mm. While none of the original broad-gauge rolling stock survived, a replica of the “Arend” and its carriages was created in 1938, giving us a glimpse of the Spoorbrug HIJSM’s early days. The HIJSM’s reach extended beyond the Old Line, eventually encompassing various rail and tram lines. Spoorbrug HIJSM, though a seemingly small piece of the puzzle, symbolizes the dawn of the railway age in the Netherlands. The HIJSM, instrumental in connecting cities and fostering trade, eventually merged with the Maatschappij tot Exploitatie van Staatsspoorwegen in 1938. This merger gave birth to the Nederlandse Spoorwegen, the Dutch national railway company. Yet, the legacy of the HIJSM, and this Spoorbrug HIJSM, remains, echoing the pioneering spirit that set the Netherlands on the track to a modern railway network.
