How did a modest hunting lodge become a five-star hotel? Welcome to Landgoed Duin en Kruidberg a place where history whispers through the trees. Originally two separate estates Duin en Berg and Kruidberg stood side by side. Wealthy Amsterdammers seeking refuge from the city’s stench began acquiring estates like these in the 17th century. Kruidberg gained royal significance when it became a hunting lodge for William III Prince of Orange. He even used it to plan the invasion of England a pivotal moment in history. The plans for the invasion were drawn up here. This culminated in the Glorious Revolution of 1688.
The two estates eventually merged in the 19th century under Baron van Hall. He built a new villa commissioning an English landscape architect to design the gardens. However the story of Landgoed Duin en Kruidberg truly took shape with Jacob Theodoor Cremer and his wife Annie Hermine Hogan. They purchased the property in 1885. They weren’t just wealthy they were influential. Cremer was a prominent figure in the Dutch East Indies. He worked for the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij a forerunner of ABN AMRO. His experience in the tobacco industry helped him accumulate a large fortune. Annie with her English background desired an English country house style.
They demolished the existing villa. They constructed a magnificent new home in the Dutch Renaissance Revival style. It quickly became one of the largest residences in the Netherlands. Prince Hendrik husband of Queen Wilhelmina was even among their guests receiving one of the first tours of the newly built estate. The grand estate hosted lavish parties. It hosted hunting events and social gatherings. The family ensured luxurious accommodations. They even had a special train station built for their convenience.
After World War II Landgoed Duin en Kruidberg served as a holiday resort for ABN AMRO employees. Later in 2002 it was reborn as a five-star hotel. Today you stand before a testament to centuries of history a blend of royal retreats opulent gatherings and modern luxury. The Landgoed Duin en Kruidberg stands as a symbol of Dutch history and hospitality. It’s a place where the past meets the present offering a unique experience for everyone who visits.
