“A sweet, pungent smell hangs in the air,” I say. That’s your first clue about Zaandijk. We are standing in a village with a fascinating past. Zaandijk is a place where the aroma of cacao processing mixes with the whispers of history.

Zaandijk sits in the municipality of Zaanstad. It is a small village with a big story. We are about 11 kilometers northwest of Amsterdam.

Let’s step back in time. The Pietersz family arrived here in 1494. They settled on “de Lage dijk,” or The Lower Dike. This marked the beginning of Zaandijk. The village was initially known as D’ Vijf Broers. It means the Five Brothers after Heyndrick Pietersz and his five sons.

Life in early Zaandijk wasn’t always easy. By 1570, only 19 houses stood here. Disaster struck in 1572 during the Eighty Years’ War. The Spanish army burned Zaandijk to the ground.

But the people of Zaandijk were resilient. They returned. They rebuilt their homes and their lives. Over time, Zaandijk began to prosper.

Today, Zaandijk is known for more than just its history. Many tourists come here. They visit the Zaanse Schans. This is a neighborhood with well-preserved historic windmills. These windmills and houses were relocated here between 1961 and 1974.

But Zaandijk itself has its own charm. As you wander through the streets, you will notice the architecture. Lovely 18th and 19th-century brick houses line the roads.

Now, about that smell. The Cacao de Zaan factory has operated here for over a century. It processes cacao. This cacao goes into chocolate products all over the Netherlands. The smell is strong. Locals are definitely used to it.

Zaandijk offers a peaceful escape. It’s a place to wander. Explore the narrow streets. Imagine life in a sturdy wooden house by the river. Just be prepared for that unique chocolate-like aroma that fills the air. The village is home to nearly 10,000 people today.

Zaandijk was once its own municipality. But in 1974, it became part of Zaanstad.

Before we move on, let me tell you about someone special from Zaandijk. Anna Maria Tobbe was one of the first female Dutch pharmacists. She was born here in 1838. She paved the way for women in medicine. Zaandijk is more than just pretty houses and windmills. It’s a place with a story of resilience and innovation. It’s a place where you can experience a unique blend of history and industry.
