“Offside!” yells a voice across the field here at Xenios. The sharp call cuts through the air, momentarily silencing the cheers and groans of the crowd. Xenios, home to SBHC Xenios, a prominent field hockey club in Amsterdam, pulsates with energy. Established on June 1, 1959, Xenios represents a vibrant blend of history and athleticism. Originally, it was known as AMHC Sarto, named after the surname of Pope Pius X, the patron saint of the school its founders attended. They practiced wherever they could find space, relying on the generosity of other clubs. This nomadic existence influenced their eventual name, Xenios. In Greek mythology, Xenios is an epithet of Zeus, protector of travelers and foreigners. It reflects that spirit of hospitality and embodies their early days of wandering. Today, Xenios proudly boasts five pristine water-based fields at Sportpark Sloten in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. This state-of-the-art facility represents a significant upgrade from their previous home at Sportpark Sloten-West. The move, completed in the 2019/2020 season, even eliminated their waiting list, opening the doors for more aspiring hockey players. The modern clubhouse, a sleek addition completed in spring 2022, provides a central hub for members. Xenios is more than just a sports club. It’s a community where the spirit of friendly competition thrives. The official colors, light blue and gray, symbolize the team’s unity and dynamism. Both the Men’s and Women’s 1st teams compete in the Overgangsklasse, a testament to their skill and dedication. As the final whistle blows, the crowd erupts once more. Xenios’ legacy continues, driven by the passion for hockey and a shared commitment to excellence.
