Doesn’t the name Witte Kerk itself conjure images of serenity and peace? This is the Witte Kerk, or White Church. It stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s rich religious and artistic history.

While I tell you about the Witte Kerk, it’s important to mention the Oude Kerk. The Oude Kerk is Amsterdam’s oldest building. It began as a wooden chapel around 1213. It became a Calvinist church after 1578.

Emanuel de Witte, a renowned Dutch artist, found great inspiration in Amsterdam’s churches. He painted the Oude Kerk more than twenty times. His paintings captured the church’s architecture and its role in the community. De Witte masterfully portrayed the light streaming through the windows. He depicted the people who gathered there.

De Witte’s paintings often showed everyday life inside the Oude Kerk. People of all ages came to the church. Some sought spiritual guidance. Others simply gathered to talk. Some parishioners even slept in the pews. Dogs roamed freely. For De Witte, the Oude Kerk was a place where life’s defining moments happened. Births and deaths were both marked there. The church served as a sacred burial ground.

One of De Witte’s paintings shows a mother nursing her child near an open tomb. This juxtaposition symbolized life’s journey within the Christian faith. De Witte included other symbolic elements in his paintings. A spade with a T-shaped handle represented the cross. A stone rolled back from the tomb recalled Christ’s Resurrection.

De Witte sometimes took artistic liberties with his depictions of the Oude Kerk. He elongated columns. He adjusted the position of furniture. He altered the light to create dramatic effects. He darkened some windows to create a somber mood.

The Oude Kerk’s ceiling is the largest medieval wooden vault in Europe. Its Estonian oak planks date back to 1390. They create exceptional acoustics. The floor consists entirely of gravestones. Around 10000 Amsterdam citizens are buried here.

The Oude Kerk also boasts impressive organs. The Vater-Müller organ is considered one of the finest Baroque organs in Europe. Today, the Oude Kerk is a center for contemporary art and heritage. It hosts site-specific installations by modern artists.

Though I’ve spent a great deal of time talking about the Oude Kerk, it helps contextualize the Witte Kerk. Both churches share a connection to Amsterdam’s history. They both reflect the city’s artistic and religious heritage. The Witte Kerk stands as another testament to Amsterdam’s enduring spirit. It continues to be a place of worship and community. Its white exterior gleams, inviting all to discover its stories and significance.
