“Once a humble twin to Oostknollendam” Westknollendam’s story unfolds before you. Nestled along the Zaan River this village boasts a rich history. Originally one with Oostknollendam it was known simply as Knollendam.

For centuries Westknollendam and its sister village shared a close bond. A shared church stood on the west bank while the parsonage resided on the east. Their interconnectedness is palpable. Children from both sides of the Zaan River attended the school in Oostknollendam. Crossing the river cost a few cents a small price for education.

Imagine the daily commutes across the water. The ferry operator’s income was modest. The annual lease rarely exceeded a few guilders. Think of the daily rhythm of life. The shared experiences the interconnectedness. This close-knit existence persisted through World War II.

The growth of mobility altered everything. The reliance on the other village faded. Shops in Westknollendam closed. Its residents increasingly looked to nearby towns like Krommenie and Wormerveer. This marked a shift towards more independence. It was a change influenced by growing transportation options.

In 1974 Westknollendam joined Zaanstad becoming part of a larger municipality. This meant a change of governance. Later in 2008 it officially gained its own identity. It achieved separate place name status. This also meant a change in postal codes for some homes.

Westknollendam’s area encompasses the Karnemelkspolder. It extends between the Nauernasche Vaart Tapsloot Zaan and Noorddijk. The island of Bloemendaal also belongs to Westknollendam. So does part of the Molletjesveer industrial area. The area is a mixture of waterways and land.

A major road built after WWII divided the village. A new bridge replaced the old ferry. This changed the village’s landscape permanently. The change to the landscape shows Westknollendam’s adaptation.

The population has fluctuated. In 1543 only 18 people inhabited the village. This number rose to 220 by 1635 a testament to the village’s growth. By 1806 there were 200 inhabitants. This then fell to 120 in 1845 before increasing again. The numbers show a fluctuating history.

Westknollendam’s economy was once dominated by agriculture and fishing. Later industrial activity arrived. There were several oil mills. A steam oil mill replaced an older one. There was also a short-lived cheese factory. The industries reflect changing times.

The original inhabitants settled near a dam around 1360. In 1374 a sluice was added. An inn likely sprang up then accommodating travelers. The development shows the early growth of Westknollendam.

Today Westknollendam is a unique village. It’s a blend of history and modern life. It is a testament to its adaptability. It’s a lovely place to visit. It stands as a reminder of a rich past and a vibrant present. Take a moment to soak it in. You are standing in a piece of history.
