What secrets does a name hold? Here at Westhaven, the name itself whispers tales of transformation. Westhaven is a vital part of Amsterdam’s Westelijk Havengebied (Western Harbor Area). It came into being as a piece of the ambitious Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan (General Expansion Plan) of 1934. Initially, in 1937, this bustling harbor was simply known as the “Fordhaven,” a nod to the nearby Ford automobile factory. The road leading to it, christened Westhavenweg in 1945, foreshadowed the harbor’s eventual name. Westhaven truly blossomed in 1961. The harbor stretched southward by a full kilometer, reaching the Basisweg and even cutting through the former island of De Horn. The year 1962 solidified Westhaven’s official name, along with those of its neighboring havens: Sonthaven, Bosporushaven, Suezhaven, Hornhaven, Beringhaven, Mainhaven, and Moezelhaven. Today, Westhaven reigns as one of the largest harbor basins within Amsterdam’s sprawling port area, a testament to the city’s growth and ambition. Close to Westhaven lies the Amsterdam Westhaven railway yard, a crucial link in the Dutch railway network.
