Hidden within Amsterdam Noord, the Westerlengtebrug carries a secret. It whispers tales of a neighborhood’s birth. The Westerlengtebrug isn’t just a bridge. It’s a concrete testament to the growth of Amsterdam Noord. Built in 1976, the Westerlengtebrug connects the northwest and southwest neighborhoods of Banne Buiksloot. The bridge’s name, bestowed only in 2018, echoes the main artery of the northwest neighborhood: Westerlengte. This street, built between 1974 and 1978, gave the area its identity. The Westerlengtebrug stands tall above the ringsloot, a drainage canal. Its height wasn’t dictated by passing ships, but by the need to meet the elevated IJdoornlaan. The Westerlengtebrug is part of a family of bridges designed by architect Dirk Sterenberg. He crafted a series of ten bridges, including the prominent brug 970 over the Noordhollandsch Kanaal. The Westerlengtebrug shares a design with brug 973 and brug 974, all lined up over the waterway. Their shared features include distinct edge plates and the unique placement of the streetlights. A curious fact: while the Westerlengtebrug connects neighborhoods, slow traffic must take a detour via brug 924. So, the next time you find yourself in Amsterdam Noord, look for the Westerlengtebrug. It’s more than just a way to cross a canal. It’s a symbol of a community’s growth and a piece of Amsterdam’s architectural history.
