“Lost and found?” the old fisherman muttered, casting his net towards the Westerdokseiland. “That’s the story of this isle, wouldn’t you say?” Westerdokseiland. A place reclaimed from the IJ, the very waters that birthed Amsterdam. Formed in 1834, it initially served as a bulwark against the relentless silting of the IJ. Westerdokseiland evolved from a vital goods hub, home to bustling grain silos, to a modern marvel of urban living. Amsterdam, a city perpetually expanding, turned its gaze to Westerdokseiland around 1990. A new chapter began in 2005. Grande Cour, VOC-Cour, Westerkaap I and II arose, followed by the sleek IJ-Dock. Today, Westerdokseiland boasts over 1,100 residences. There are cafes, restaurants, offices, artist studios, and a palace of justice. Even cruise ships find a home here. Approximately 2,500 people call Westerdokseiland home. A diverse community where a quarter of the population are under 25. Over 40% are between 25 and 50, with the remaining residents often described as active and travel-loving. The island pulsates with a unique energy. It once housed the world’s largest prosecco selection. A local taste laboratory achieved national recognition. Even a small brewery found such success it had to relocate to larger premises. Westerdokseiland. A modern district with fresh faces, yet retaining the charm of a close-knit village. A place where conversations flow freely. Sixteen “broedplaatsen” nurture artists and creative minds. These spaces, offered at affordable rents, provide a haven for creative development. Each “broedplaats” possesses its own distinct identity, preserving a touch of Amsterdam’s bohemian past. Social cohesion thrives here. Residents gather for drinks, yoga, or shared meals. A monthly tradition sees a rotating group of about ten residents prepare a feast for thirty neighbors. Pub quizzes, Sunday afternoon cafe concerts, informal cinema outings, and city walks add to the vibrant social fabric. Few original inhabitants remain. Many newcomers, however, vow never to leave. Who wouldn’t want to live and work in such a place? Westerdokseiland. A village within a world city, where community thrives, the heart of Amsterdam beckons, and the world awaits just around the corner.
