Gazing across the tranquil waters, we find ourselves at Waver. This isn’t a bustling city center, but a peaceful hamlet. Waver offers a unique glimpse into a quieter side of the Netherlands. Waver is nestled in the province of North Holland, a part of the municipality of Ouder-Amstel. It’s located approximately 13 kilometers south of the vibrant heart of Amsterdam. Waver isn’t a large place. It’s a small community consisting of around 40 houses. It possesses its own distinct identity. Look for the place name signs marking its presence. While Waver itself might not fill history books, its connection to the Oude Waver is significant. This river played a role in a 16th-century dispute. The Proosdij van Sint-Marie in Utrecht and the city of Amsterdam clashed over the right to collect tithes along the Waver. Amsterdam believed it had purchased these rights. However, the Proosdij disagreed, citing a 13th-century deed. The legal battle stretched on for years, eventually reaching the Grote Raad van Mechelen. The schout of Ouderkerk aan de Amstel represented Amsterdam in this historical tug-of-war. So, while you won’t find grand monuments here in Waver, its story is woven into the fabric of Dutch history. It’s a reminder that even the smallest places can play a part in larger narratives. Waver offers a chance to escape the urban hustle and experience the serene beauty of the Dutch countryside.
