Village of Warder. Ever wonder how a small village can hold so much history? Warder in North Holland is more than just a blip on the map. It is a place with a story that stretches back centuries.

Warder first appeared in historical records between 1130 and 1161. Back then it was known as Werthere. The name means island. The village’s location has shifted over time. It started east on the former lake Almere. As the Zuiderzee grew, Warder moved inland.

The Warder we see today took shape in the late 12th century. People came here to dig peat. Peat was an important fuel source at the time. The elementary school in Warder has a unique design. Built in 1885, it is an L-shaped building with a tower. It was renovated around 1920. Imagine children learning in this charming building.

In 1840, Warder had a population of just 290 people. For many years, Warder was its own municipality. From 1817 to 1970, it stood alone. Then, it became part of the new municipality of Zeevang. More recently in 2016, Warder joined the municipality of Edam-Volendam.

The Dutch landscape changed dramatically. In 1960, land consolidation altered Warder’s appearance. Before that, canals crisscrossed the land. These canals drained the wet peatlands. Farmers could only reach their land by boat. The consolidation effort changed this. Farmers now had land near their farms. Dams replaced canals. Tractors could access the land. New farmhouses sprung up outside the village.

The cooperative dairy factory built in 1911 played a vital role. It ceased operations in 1967 because of increasing scales. The factory building was repurposed. It became a pet food factory.

Many of Warder’s older farmhouses have found new life. People from cities like Amsterdam and Haarlem bought them. They transformed them into residential properties. This influx of people increased Warder’s population in the 1960s and 70s.

As of 2023, Warder is home to 800 residents. The village retains its charm with many old houses. The oldest house dates back to 1811. The newest was built in 2020. Warder’s story is one of adaptation and resilience. From its early days as a peat excavation settlement to its modern identity. Warder continues to evolve while holding onto its past. Take a moment to appreciate this village. Warder is a living piece of Dutch history.
