Doesn’t the Wandelend Muurtje Sculpture look peculiar? This ceramic artwork features a blue gate and a red figure. The red figure seems to have twisted legs. This is the Wandelend Muurtje. It is a sculpture by Dutch artist Jan Snoeck. He lived from 1927 to 2018.

The Wandelend Muurtje Sculpture has two parts. There is a rectangular blue gate. There is also a red figure with twisted legs. The Wandelend Muurtje was created in 1984.

Originally, the Wandelend Muurtje stood in front of a Montessori school. This was on the Polderweg in Amsterdam-Oost. The sculpture was there since 1984. In March 2019, the Wandelend Muurtje was moved. It now stands in Amsterdam Nieuw-West. You can find it on a grass field. It is between the Slotervaart and the Plesmanlaan. It is northeast of the roundabout of Louis Davidsstraat.

A district administrator officially unveiled it on March 27, 2019. Kunstwacht Amsterdam wondered about its symbolism. Does the Wandelend Muurtje represent an obstacle? Does it symbolize a temporary visit? The red figure has detached from the wall after all.

The Wandelend Muurtje sculpture now stands near the Slotervaart. It invites you to ponder its meaning. The blue gate and the red figure spark curiosity. What does this unusual artwork want to tell us? Take a moment to appreciate Jan Snoeck’s creation. Consider the possible interpretations of the Wandelend Muurtje. It certainly adds character to Amsterdam Nieuw-West.
