Whispers of peace echo within the walls of the Vredevorstkerk. Here in Amsterdam’s Pijp district, the Vredevorstkerk stands as a testament to faith and resilience. The Vredevorstkerk, also known as Our Lady Queen of Peace Church, isn’t just a beautiful building. It holds a significant place in the heart of this community. Its story begins in the aftermath of World War I, a time when the world yearned for peace. The desire for a dedicated space for worship in this growing part of Amsterdam led to the construction of a temporary church, the “Stable of Bethlehem,” in 1918. But the community’s vision extended beyond a temporary solution. In 1923, construction began on the Vredevorstkerk, designed by Jos Bekkers, son of the renowned church architect Peter Bekkers. The Vredevorstkerk’s dedication to Our Lady Queen of Peace reflects the widespread devotion to Mary as a symbol of peace during the turbulent post-war years. The church was consecrated in 1924, becoming a spiritual anchor for the community. Interestingly, the square in front of the Vredevorstkerk is now named Vredeskerkplein, further solidifying its importance in the neighborhood. The Vredevorstkerk continues to serve its community, offering a place of solace and reflection amidst the vibrant city.
