Two colossal heads dominate the scene here at the Voor water Sculpture. They stare out in opposite directions, seemingly lost in their own worlds. This striking piece, officially known as “Two Immovable Heads”, is the work of Dutch artist Mark Manders. The Voor water Sculpture was unveiled on Rokin on September 5, 2017. It sits proudly outside Hudson’s Bay Amsterdam and the Scheltema bookstore. The area around the Voor water Sculpture is designed as a courtyard with seating. It’s meant to be a relaxing spot to enjoy the art and the bustling city life. In the warmer months, the Voor water Sculpture was intended to function as a fountain. Water would flow from the top of the heads, cascading down their shoulders and across the base. Unfortunately, there have been some issues with the water overflowing onto the sidewalk. Because of this, the fountain feature is temporarily out of commission. Even without the flowing water, the Voor water Sculpture is a powerful presence on Rokin. It’s a thought-provoking piece that adds a touch of modern art to this historic Amsterdam street. The Voor water Sculpture is just a short walk from Dam Square. So it’s easy to include in your exploration of the city center.
