Vogelenzang a name meaning ‘bird song’ in Dutch is a village in the municipality of Bloemendaal North Holland. It’s a place steeped in history a place where the past whispers secrets to those who listen. More than just a pretty name Vogelenzang boasts a rich and fascinating past.
At its heart sits Huis te Vogelenzang a house with a long story. Built around 1600 by the Counts of Holland it was later rebuilt in a neoclassical style two hundred years later. Today this privately owned estate features 80 hectares of parkland. Old coastal dunes and plains with historic pastures surround the house. This remarkable estate offers a tranquil retreat a haven of peace.
But Vogelenzang’s connection to water is just as remarkable. Since 1853 Amsterdam has drawn its fresh drinking water from the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen. These water supply dunes are mainly within Zandvoort municipality. They use 34 square kilometers of sand dunes to filter the water. The Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen is the oldest water supply area in the Netherlands. Vogelenzang lies close to this vital resource.
The area was once part of Den Hout a vast forest between Alkmaar and Leiden. The Counts of Holland hunted in this forest. In the 13th century Count Floris V established a hunting lodge here. This original lodge is gone. Yet hints of its presence remain. You can still see the outline of the old moat near Huis te Vogelenzang.
Vogelenzang also has another historical landmark. There used to be a train station called Vogelenzang-Bennebroek. The wooden building opened in 1842. It closed in 1944 and still stands today a silent testament to a bygone era.
So as you stand here in Vogelenzang reflect on its vibrant past. Think of the Scouts the Counts the centuries of history that have unfolded here. The bird song the water the dunes. Vogelenzang is more than just a village it is a living tapestry woven from nature history and community. A place where the echoes of the past resonate with the quiet beauty of the present.
