Over a gentle curve in the Waver River, the Voetangelbrug gracefully arches. This unassuming bridge holds a story richer than its simple structure suggests. The Voetangelbrug connects the Ronde Hoep Oost with the Voetangelweg, a pathway towards Abcoude. It stands as a gateway between the bustling city and the tranquil countryside. This bridge isn’t just a crossing. It’s a remnant of a vibrant past.

The Voetangelbrug’s name echoes a former inn that stood at the junction of three small rivers: the Holendrecht, Bullewijk, and Waver. This inn, shaped like a caltrop (a metal device used to impede soldiers), wasn’t just a place for weary travelers to rest. It also served as a toll house. Imagine, in 1626, the inn bustling with activity. Travelers on barges and horse-drawn carriages, journeying to Amsterdam or Utrecht, were stopped here to pay their dues. This enforced pause made it a “foot snare” on their journey, hence the name “Voetangel.”

The delay wasn’t always unwelcome though. Horses were refreshed, and people could eat, drink, and socialize in the inn’s common room. Gambling was a frequent pastime. Sometimes, entire shiploads of goods were wagered. This seemingly ordinary bridge stands as a silent witness to centuries of commerce, travel, and human interaction. The Voetangelbrug, though rebuilt over time, occupies the same spot where this lively hub once thrived.

Today, a restaurant occupies the former inn’s location. The surrounding area remains largely undeveloped, with only a few houses dotting the landscape. The Voetangelbrug, operated manually on the west side, has a single hand-operated barrier on the east. Both the bridge and the narrow roads alongside the three rivers have a limited weight capacity. The next time you cross the Voetangelbrug, take a moment to appreciate its unassuming presence. Remember the stories it whispers. It’s a testament to a time when the pace of life was slower and the meeting of paths created a space for human connection. The Voetangelbrug: a bridge over water, a link to the past.
