What if these weren’t just sculptures but petrified memories of a bygone era? The Vissen Sculpture stands before us. It is more than just art. It is a portal to Amsterdam’s watery past.

Suzanne Willems created this artwork in 2007. She was commissioned to create two pieces for the Vrijburcht complex. This collective project began in 2000. Locals wanted to create a unique living space. Architect Hein de Haan collaborated with residents on the design. The result was 52 homes, studios, a café, and even a theater.

Vrijburcht officially opened on April 21, 2007. A local councilor unveiled Suzanne Willems’ art on the building’s facade. A second artwork, a boat with sea life reliefs, sits nearby.

Look closely at the Vissen Sculpture. The artwork has a clear connection to this area’s history. Until the 21st century, this spot was underwater. It was once part of the Zuiderzee. From 1932, it became known as the IJsselmeer.

The Vissen Sculpture features 274 colored fish. They adorn the corner facade of the theater. The panel is four meters high and over three meters wide. Each fish is made of anodized aluminum. This gives them a unique reflective quality. The fish seem to shimmer and change color as the light shifts.

Suzanne Willems drew inspiration from the past. She noted that fish once swam freely where Vrijburcht now stands. Her work captures this transformation. The fish are now “on dry land.” They hang side-by-side. This arrangement evokes images of Zuiderzee fishermen drying their catch in the sun.

Willems’ art often includes animals and landscapes. Her style is often figurative. She incorporates humor and lightheartedness into her pieces. Her other work near the Vissen Sculpture is a folded boat. It features marine life reliefs on its exterior. You can spot seaweed, shells, small fish, and crustaceans there.

The Vissen Sculpture captures the spirit of Steigereiland. It celebrates the area’s history and its modern community. It reminds us that art can connect us to the past. It also enriches our present.

Consider the Vissen Sculpture as a tribute to Amsterdam’s ever-changing landscape. These colorful fish tell a story. It is a story of water, land, and the creative spirit that binds them together.
