Deep in the heart of the Dutch countryside, nestled amidst the whispering trees and rolling meadows, lies Vinkenduin. It was once part of the grand Leyduin estate, mentioned as far back as 1596. But Vinkenduin holds its own unique story, etched in the very land itself. Vinkenduin, “Finch Dune,” owes its name to a curious past. Imagine the scene in the 18th century: wealthy landowners indulging in the peculiar sport of finch trapping. The heart of this activity was the vinkenbaan, a finch trap. At Vinkenduin, the remnants of this vinkenbaan are still visible today. High earthen walls encircle a small field dotted with linden trees. This was the stage for a rather cruel form of entertainment. Guests would gather in a special hut, hosted by the estate owner, to witness the spectacle. Nets, called “druip,” stretched along the earthen walls, ready to be drawn together, ensnaring unsuspecting finches lured by the song of caged birds. These decoy finches were kept in darkness for months. Their eyes were even seared shut to trick them into believing it was spring, prompting them to sing incessantly. Thousands of finches met their fate in this manner each year. In 1912, the practice was outlawed thanks to the Bird Protection Act. Many vinkenbanen were then repurposed for scientific study, used for bird ringing and observation. Vinkenduin itself gained its independence in 1919, separated from Leyduin and Koekoeksduin. A new chapter began with Miss Prins, who commissioned architect A. de Maaker to design a house mirroring the one at Leyduin, along with a gate, a forest pavilion, and staff quarters. While little remains of the gardens designed by Leonard Springer, the house, built around 1925, still stands as a testament to this era. Today, Vinkenduin, now part of Landschap Noord-Holland, offers a tranquil retreat. Visitors can stroll through the grounds, imagining the echoes of the past, from the days of grand estates and finch trapping, to the quiet serenity of the present. The very name, Vinkenduin, whispers tales of a bygone era, reminding us of the evolving relationship between humans and nature.
