Five bronze elements stand before you. This is the Vijf wilken sculpture. It’s a sight many overlook a testament to resilience and collaboration. Originally created in 1980 by Andre Volten the Vijf wilken wasn’t always here on Surinameplein. It began its life as part of an installation on Jaarbeursplein in Utrecht.

Imagine Volten’s vision. He was a master of blending sculpture architecture and urban design. He crafted these five harmonious bronze pieces intending them to enhance their environment. However when Utrecht’s railway station area underwent redevelopment the Vijf wilken sculpture was removed. It faced demolition.

But then a determined individual stepped forward. They launched a collaborative effort. This involved the Jaarbeurs the Andre Volten foundation city officials and even the hoisting company that would move the massive bronze elements. They saved the Vijf wilken sculpture.

Finding a new home for five enormous bronze pieces proved challenging. Local residents the Andre Volten foundation and ArtZuid curator Cintha van Heeswijck worked tirelessly. Their combined efforts brought the sculpture to Surinameplein in 2015.

The placement here on Surinameplein wasn’t intended to be permanent. It was meant to be temporary. Yet the Vijf wilken sculpture remains. It stands as a powerful reminder. It shows that monumental works of art can be relocated. Expert supervision is key. The result is a beautiful harmonious ensemble. Volten’s original intention is fulfilled. The Vijf wilken sculpture enhances its surroundings.

So stand here before these bronze forms. Feel the weight of history their journey. Appreciate the collaboration that saved this stunning artwork. The Vijf wilken sculpture is more than just art. It’s a story of preservation and partnership. It’s a story of triumph over adversity. A testament to the power of community. A lasting legacy.
