A sanctuary of peace amidst the bustling city. That’s the Vietnamese Tempel Pagode Van Hanh. It stands as a testament to resilience and faith.

The Pagode Van Hanh is more than just a building. It’s a living embodiment of Vietnamese Buddhist culture in the Netherlands. It’s a place where history echoes in the gentle chime of temple bells. It’s a place where the stories of boat people find solace.

Imagine the journey of those who escaped Vietnam after the war. Around 2 million people risked everything. They fled in fragile boats. About 10000 found refuge in the Netherlands. Many were Buddhists. They brought their faith and traditions with them. They longed for a place of worship. A place to connect with their heritage. A place to call home.

The initial years were challenging. The Vietnamese Buddhist community lacked a dedicated temple. Support from monks in France and Germany helped. Then in 1993 a significant step happened. The Vietnamese Buddhist Cooperation Foundation in the Netherlands bought a farmhouse. They transformed it into the Van Hanh Pagode in Nederhorst-den-Berg.

But this was not the final chapter. The growing congregation needed more space. A new Pagode was built in Almere. On December 12 2012 the first stone was laid. The new Van Hanh Pagode was completed in 2015. It stands as a symbol of perseverance and community.

Within the Pagode you find three central Buddha statues. These statues represent Insight Courage and Compassion. These qualities are central to Buddhist teachings. They guide the community. The Pagode isn’t just for religious ceremonies. It hosts weddings funerals and commemorations. It’s a place of gathering for the community. A vital part of the vibrant Vietnamese culture in Amsterdam.
