Reflecting in the heart of Amsterdam’s Dam Square, the National Monument stands. This imposing structure is more than just stone and sculpture. It is the Netherlands’ most important memorial to World War II.

The National Monument serves as a daily reminder of the war’s atrocities. It also honors those who were lost. Every year on National Remembrance Day, the royal family and local residents gather here. They pay their respects to fallen soldiers from both WWII and more recent conflicts.

Designed by Dutch architect J.J.P. Oud, the monument was unveiled on May 4, 1956. Queen Juliana of the Netherlands did the honors. The central element is a concrete conical pillar. It stands 22 metres high or 72 ft. The pillar is covered entirely by white travertine stone.

On the front of the pillar is a relief called “Peace”. It consists of four chained male figures. These figures represent the suffering endured during the war. To either side are two male sculptures. They represent members of the Dutch resistance. The left figure symbolizes the resistance by the intelligentsia. The right figure symbolizes the resistance by the working classes. Weeping dogs are at their feet. These represent suffering and loyalty.

Above the central relief is a sculpture. A woman with a child in her arms is surrounded by doves. This symbolizes victory, peace, and new life. A relief on the back of the pillar shows doves ascending. This symbolizes liberation.

The monument sits on a series of concentric rings. These rings form steps leading up to the monument. In front, on either side, stand two sculptures of lions. They are on circular pedestals symbolizing the Netherlands. A semicircular wall surrounds the back. It contains eleven urns. Each urn holds soil from World War II execution grounds. The soil is from war cemeteries in each of the Dutch provinces. Three years later, a twelfth urn was added. It contains soil from the Dutch East Indies, now Indonesia.

The pillar carries a Latin inscription. It translates to “Here, where the heart of the fatherland is, may this monument, which citizens carry in their heart, gaze at God’s stars”.

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the National Monument became a gathering place for hippies. They saw it as a symbol of liberty. For a time, people slept around the monument in sleeping bags.

The National Monument has undergone restorations. During the restoration in the 1990s, the entire monument was disassembled. The brick interior of the central pillar was replaced with concrete. In 2007, a wheelchair ramp was added.

So take a moment to reflect on the significance of this place. Remember the sacrifices made. Consider the ongoing quest for peace and justice in our world. The National Monument in Amsterdam stands as a testament to the enduring human spirit.
