In 1672 Uithoorn found itself on the front lines. The Franco-Dutch War raged. Fortifications sprang up protecting this vital location.

Welcome to Uithoorn a town with a rich history. Its name means “the out corner” reflecting its original location at the edge of the Zijdelmeer and Amstel River. For centuries agriculture and animal husbandry were its lifeblood. The land however slowly subsided making farming increasingly difficult.

Around 1600 peat extraction boomed. Large ponds formed. These were later transformed into valuable polders. This transformation shaped Uithoorn’s landscape. It also affected its economy. The extraction of peat played a major role in the town’s development. The process however had lasting consequences. The resulting changes to the land still mark Uithoorn today.

A sulphuric acid plant opened in 1863. This was followed by a coal tar processor in 1922. These industries brought jobs but also pollution. A tragic explosion at the Nevcin Polymers site in 1992 resulted in three deaths. Despite this these industries remain in operation. They demonstrate the complex relationship between industrial progress and community well-being. The story of these plants is a significant part of Uithoorn’s industrial past and present.

In 1885 several fortifications were built around Uithoorn. This was part of the Stelling van Amsterdam a defense line designed to protect Amsterdam. These structures reflect the town’s historical importance in defending this crucial area. These fortifications still stand. They are a testament to Uithoorn’s strategic role in the past.

The Bovenkerk-Uithoorn railway line connected Uithoorn to the outside world. Passenger service ended in 1950 freight service in 1972. Parts of the abandoned railway line have since been repurposed. A busway now runs along part of the old track. The tram line 25 is planned to extend along the right-of-way opening in 2024. The old railway station still stands. It serves as a reminder of the area’s past transportation network.

After World War II Uithoorn experienced rapid growth. New neighborhoods sprang up. Thamerdal in 1948 Zijdelwaard in 1960 Legmeer in 1972. Meerwijk-West and Meerwijk-Oost followed from 1985 onwards. These expansions demonstrate the remarkable growth Uithoorn witnessed in the post-war era. They represent significant changes to the town’s infrastructure. The town’s new shopping center built in 1991 at the cost of many original buildings marks another pivotal change.

Uithoorn’s story is one of adaptation resilience and transformation. From a small village at the edge of a lake to a thriving municipality Uithoorn’s history is rich and full of stories waiting to be discovered. The town continues to evolve. Its past informs its present its future remains to be written.
