Originally called Udam, meaning “dam outside the dike,” Uitdam awaits. This village in North Holland offers a unique glimpse into Dutch history. Today we will explore this fascinating place together.

Uitdam is part of the municipality of Waterland. It sits on the coast of the IJsselmeer. Amsterdam is just 12 kilometers southwest. This puts Uitdam in a prime location with a rich past.

Uitdam played a vital role in the 17th century. Fishermen and craftsmen here were not just villagers. They worked part-time for the “Scheepskamelen.” These “ship camels” were ingenious devices. They helped ships navigate the shallow waters of the Amsterdam harbor.

Imagine large, buoyant structures filled with ballast water. These were attached to the sides of ships. The water would then be pumped out, lifting the ship. This allowed vessels to float over the sandbanks. This invention helped trade flourish.

The village suffered greatly during the storm flood of 1916. The dike broke, and the sea inundated Waterland. This disaster spurred the creation of the Afsluitdijk. This major project transformed the Zuiderzee into the IJsselmeer. Today, it is the largest freshwater lake in Europe.

Uitdam’s first church was built in the 17th century. The current church dates back to 1937. It is a testament to the village’s enduring spirit.

In 1628, Uitdam and Zuiderwoude formed a heerlijkheid. This was a type of local administrative unit. This lasted until 1811. In 1840, Uitdam had only 88 residents.

Uitdam may be small. However, it has a unique charm. It offers a sense of island life. It is surrounded by water on all sides.

The people of Uitdam found a clever way to overcome the challenge of shallow waters. This ingenuity boosted Amsterdam’s trade. Sailors frequented the local cafe while waiting. Clothes hanging to dry on the dike looked like diapers. This earned the residents the nickname “skeetebroekers.”

Today, Uitdam is a peaceful village. It has a population of around 135 people. It is a place where history and natural beauty meet. The village is a reminder of the resourcefulness of the Dutch people. The people overcame geographical challenges. They also contributed significantly to maritime trade.

As we leave Uitdam, remember its story. Think of the “Scheepskamelen” lifting ships. Recall the storm that changed the landscape. And appreciate the resilient spirit of this charming village. Uitdam may be small. Yet its legacy is large.
