Haven’t you heard of Truus Menger-Oversteegen? This bridge bears the name of a remarkable woman. Truus Menger-Oversteegen was a Dutch sculptor and painter. She became known for her brave actions during World War II. She was a member of the Dutch Resistance.

The Truus Menger-Oversteegenbrug reminds us of her courageous spirit. Truus worked with her sister Freddie Oversteegen and Hannie Schaft. Together, they fought against the Nazi occupation.

Truus and Hannie planned to eliminate NSB member Fake Krist in 1944. Other Resistance fighters killed him before they could. In 1945, they executed NSB police officer Willem Zirkzee. They wounded Ko Langendijk, who worked for the Sicherheitsdienst.

After Hannie Schaft’s arrest in 1945, Truus tried to rescue her. She disguised herself as a German nurse. Sadly, Schaft had already been executed. Truus did not know this at the time.

After the war, Truus married Piet Menger. They named their eldest child in memory of Hannie Schaft. Truus spoke at schools and universities about her wartime experiences. She discussed wars, antisemitism, tolerance, and indifference.

Her book “Not then, Not now, Not ever” recounted her experiences. Yad Vashem recognized Truus as Righteous Among the Nations in 1967. She became an Officer of the Order of Orange-Nassau in 1998. In 2014, Truus and her sister received the Mobilization War Cross.

The Truus Menger-Oversteegenbrug serves as a reminder of her dedication. It honors her commitment to justice. It embodies the strength and resilience of the Dutch Resistance.

Imagine Truus Menger-Oversteegen standing here. She fought for freedom and justice. She risked her life to protect others. Her legacy continues to inspire us all.

Consider the weight of history as you cross this bridge. Remember the sacrifices made by Truus and her fellow resistance fighters. Let their courage motivate you. Let it motivate you to stand up for what is right.
