Atop this colossal structure I stand. The Toren van Wormer. It dominates the landscape. Its 144 meters pierce the sky. This isn’t just a tower. It’s a silent giant. A testament to communication technology.
The Toren van Wormer. Built in 1970 by the Rijksgebouwendienst for the PTT. It began its life as a vital link in a network of radio towers. These towers connected the Netherlands. Their network spanned from 1955 to 1989. The Toren van Wormer is the tallest structure in the Zaanstreek region of North Holland. Imagine the engineers. Their vision. Their skill. To build something this magnificent. Something so enduring.
Initially used for telephony. This concrete giant has seen many changes. Its three platforms once held transmitters and receivers. Above these sits a glass-enclosed room. A room once used for reporting. A hub of activity. A center of communication.
In 1999 a 30-meter mast was added. This was for the regional broadcaster NH. They wanted to broadcast television signals. A 200 kW transmitter was installed. This boosted broadcasting across the region.
Since 2003 the Toren van Wormer has also sent out DVB-T signals for Digitenne. It even transmits FM frequencies for BNR Nieuwsradio and Qmusic. It’s a multi-purpose marvel. It houses more than just telecommunications equipment. It’s become a center for various communications channels.
The PTT KPN tower. Owned by Alticom until 2017. Then the Spanish telecom company Cellnex Telecom bought it. NOVEC BV owns the broadcasting mast atop the tower since 2006. It continues its role in connecting the country. The local people always call it the Toren van Wormer. A name that reflects its local pride. A name that speaks to its impact on the community.
The Toren van Wormer. A silent giant. Its height a testament to human ingenuity. It stands as a symbol of communication. It connects the past and the present. It is the enduring landmark of the Zaanstreek.
