Tying Amsterdam-Noord to the city center since 1660, the Tolhuis stands as a testament to time. It has transformed from a toll collector’s house to a beloved cultural hub.

The Tolhuis, now before us, wasn’t always the stylish venue you see today. Once, in 1662, a simple house stood here. This is where toll was collected from ships wanting to sail on the Buikslotervaart. The toll collector lived here with his family. Soon after, it became an inn.

Imagine the scene. City gates closing at night. Weary sailors unable to enter. The Tolhuis offering them a place to sleep. Behind this very building lay the Galgenveld. From 1400 to 1795, criminals were displayed. Visiting the Galgenveld became a family activity. In 1770, a tea dome was added to the Tolhuis. Even after the Galgenveld was cleared, this place remained popular.

But, by 1859, the old building was past its prime. The Amsterdam city council decided to build a new one. This is the Tolhuis that stands before us.

Designed by assistant city architect W. Springer, it boasts an eclectic style. Yellow brick gives it a warm, inviting look. Notice the T-shaped layout. The south and west sides face the IJ. Multiple shield and saddle roofs create a dynamic effect.

The Tolhuis wasn’t just a building. Stadsingenieur P. van der Sterr designed a large garden. It quickly became a favorite spot for Amsterdammers. They enjoyed stunning views of the city. Open-air concerts started around 1870.

But, in 1938, the Bataafse Petroleum Maatschappij, later Shell, bought the Tolhuistuin. For many years, the public couldn’t access this beautiful area. In 2002, the City of Amsterdam bought the land back. Now, the Tolhuistuin is again a cultural and culinary meeting place.

In 1989-1990, architect Theo Bosch renovated the Tolhuis. A wedding hall was added on the north side. In 1998, the Tolhuis became a national monument.

Today, no tolls are collected here. The Tolhuis continues its function as a restaurant and event location. From grand celebrations to today’s cinema events, it remains a place of relaxation and entertainment. The Tolhuis has a rich history dating back centuries. The atmosphere is beautifully captured in the painting ‘Summer Evening on the IJ’. This painting can be admired here on location.

Take a moment to appreciate the Tolhuis. It’s a place where history, culture, and community meet. As you enjoy the view, remember the countless stories. They echo through these walls and across the water. From toll collection to cultural celebration, the Tolhuis continues to connect Amsterdam’s past and present.
