In 1970, it transformed again, this time into a haven for artistic expression. The Milky Way opened its doors as a cultural center, initially just for the summer. Its cafe, restaurant, and performance hall were a hit. This success led to a permanent opening in 1973. The Milky Way became a launchpad for emerging and established artists. U2’s first concert outside Ireland and the UK was here in 1980. A then-unknown Rammstein played to a small crowd of 40 in 1994. Even the Grateful Dead graced the stage in 1981, playing two impromptu shows with borrowed instruments. The Milky Way isn’t just music. It’s a multi-faceted space. With its multiple halls, cinema, and exhibition space, it offers a universe of creative experiences. The largest hall, The Max, holds 1,500 people and hosts major acts. The Old Hall, the original concert space, still vibrates with energy. The Rabo Hall, in a separate building, showcases film and theater. Smaller performances and plays find a home in the Theater Hall. Even a private cinema and exhibition space exist within this cultural cosmos. The Milky Way has seen millions of visitors since it opened. It has become a cultural icon, a testament to the power of transformation and creative expression.
