A legendary name echoes through Rotterdam’s history. It’s the Thalia. This isn’t just any cinema. It’s a saga of ambition resilience and artistic triumph.

Abraham Tuschinski a Polish Jew dreamed big. He envisioned a cinema unlike any other. His first Thalia opened in Rotterdam in 1911. It was a modest start on Coolvest. However its lifespan was short. The Zandstraat neighborhood’s redevelopment ended its run in 1912.

Undeterred Tuschinski opened a second Thalia on Hoogstraat in 1916. This too met a tragic end. The 1940 bombing destroyed it along with his other cinemas. A total of 4500 seats vanished in the flames.

Yet the spirit of the Thalia refused to be extinguished. From the ashes a new chapter emerged. The Lutusca a temporary cinema arose in 1946. This was a collaborative effort by cinema operators including Tuschinski’s own chain. It served as a vital temporary space.

Then came Thalia’s third incarnation on Kruiskade. Architect JPL Hendriks designed this masterpiece. He collaborated with Lex van den Bosch. The design echoed the pre-war grandeur of Tuschinski’s original vision. A ten-year-old Ronnie Gerschtanowitz a relative of Tuschinski’s wife drove the first pile into the ground in 1954.

The new Thalia opened in July 1955. It boasted 800 seats in a fan-shaped auditorium. This unusual shape was due to the site’s constraints. It ensured excellent views for every seat.

But the most striking feature of the Thalia was its facade. Sculptor Carel Kneulman created a magnificent relief. It depicted Thalia the muse of comedy. The relief a green abstraction is composed of 24 concrete slabs. It stands as a testament to Rotterdam’s postwar revival.

The Thalia’s story isn’t just about bricks and mortar. It’s about the enduring power of art and the human spirit. It stood for decades. Eventually it became a cafe then a party venue. Even today it remains a protected heritage site. The Thalia’s legacy lives on. It continues to inspire awe and wonder. It reminds us of the stories embedded within the city’s heart.
