Pieter Teyler van der Hulst, a name synonymous with philanthropy and the arts in Haarlem. Here at Teylers Hofje, his legacy lives on. This isn’t just a picturesque courtyard. It’s a testament to a man’s vision for the well-being of his community. Teylers Hofje, established in 1787 from Pieter Teyler’s legacy, offers a glimpse into a unique chapter of Haarlem’s history. Teyler, a wealthy cloth merchant and banker, left a significant mark on the city, not just with this almshouse, but also with the renowned Teylers Museum nearby. Originally, Teyler established a hofje in 1752 after his wife’s passing. It was located on the grounds of what is now the Vrouwe- en Antonie Gasthuys. His will stipulated a new hofje be built along the Spaarne River, leading to Teylers Hofje’s relocation to Koudenhorn in 1787. This grand entrance, with its Doric columns, initially misled many into thinking it housed a palace or government building. It was, in fact, intended for “honorable poor ladies” over seventy, regardless of their religious affiliation. Twenty-four dwellings were built around a central garden, complete with two sundials. Two regent rooms flank the entrance. Modernizations in 1989 reduced the number of houses to 22. The hofje continues to house women, generally single and over 50, without children or pets. The architect, Leendert Viervant, also designed the Oval Room in Teylers Museum. Notice the neoclassical facade on the Koudenhorn side. The Vereniging Hendrick de Keyser now manages the property, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Teylers Hofje stands as a quiet haven within the bustling city, a reminder of a time when caring for the community was paramount. As you wander through this peaceful oasis, remember the legacy of Pieter Teyler and the lives this hofje has touched over the centuries. Please respect the residents’ privacy as you enjoy this unique piece of Haarlem’s history.
