Beneath the leafy canopy of Vondelpark, who is this bronze figure? This is Teun de Jager. He is a character brought to life by sculptor Jan Bronner.

Teun de Jager is not just a sculpture. He is a piece of Dutch literary history. He represents a figure from Nicolaas Beets’ famous book, Camera Obscura. Beets wrote under the pseudonym Hildebrand.

The statue’s journey is as interesting as the character it portrays. Jan Bronner initially created Teun de Jager as part of a larger monument. This monument honored Hildebrand in his hometown Haarlem. The commission came in 1914. But the complete work was not unveiled until 1963.

Bronner created an octagonal fountain. It featured figures from Camera Obscura. Teun de Jager was one of them. Others included Buikje, Keesje, Suzette Noiret, and more. A statue of Hildebrand watched from a distance.

The original sculptures were carved from fragile French limestone. They suffered damage from weather and vandals. They were replaced by hard stone copies in 1983. The original figures found a new home at Kasteel Nijenhuis in Heino.

But Teun de Jager’s story does not end there. In 1958, Amsterdam commissioned Bronner to create a bronze version. This is the statue you see here in Vondelpark. It is based on plaster casts from 1950.

Jan Bronner was a significant figure in Dutch sculpture. He taught at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten from 1914 to 1947. Piet Esser succeeded him. Bronner founded “De Groep,” a group of figurative abstraction artists.

Bronner believed that meaningful art should integrate with architecture. He saw sculpture as a form of life. His perfectionism led to a small body of work. This Teun de Jager statue is a testament to his vision.

Interestingly, other bronze casts of the figures exist elsewhere. You can find Buikje and Suzette Noiret in Eindhoven’s Stadspark. Another Keesje statue stands in Amsterdam’s Siegerpark.

So, as you stand before Teun de Jager, remember his story. Remember the literary character and the artist who gave him form. Remember the journey from Haarlem to Amsterdam. This statue is more than bronze. It is a piece of Dutch cultural heritage.
