Journey with me back to 1788. A devastating flood sweeps across the landscape, forever changing the face of Ter Aar. The old village of Langeraar, once nestled along the banks of the small canal De Aar, is washed away. From this watery grave, a new village rises, reborn in the northern part of the area. This new Langeraar forms the heart of what we now know as Ter Aar. Ter Aar, straddling the small canal De Aar, is more than just one village. It’s a tapestry woven from the threads of smaller communities. To the east lies Korteraar, meaning “Short Aar”. To the west, Langeraar stretches out, aptly named “Long Aar”. These two villages, distinct yet intertwined, contribute to Ter Aar’s unique character. Imagine standing near the canal, the gentle flow of the water mirroring the passage of time. Close by, at the former site of old Langeraar, lies Aardam, built near a bridge spanning the Aar. Northwest of Aardam, you’d find the Kerkbuurt, or “Church Neighbourhood”. Here, a reformed church stands as a testament to the village’s history, its stones echoing with the whispers of centuries past. The church, built in 1568, has witnessed the ebb and flow of life in Ter Aar, from floods to rebuilding, from quiet village life to its incorporation into the larger municipality of Nieuwkoop. Even further north, the hamlet of Papenveer clusters around a ferry crossing, connecting the communities across the Aar. The history of Ter Aar is one of resilience and adaptation. A village swept away by disaster, only to rise again, stronger and more vibrant than before. Ter Aar today stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of its people, a community shaped by the waters that both threatened and sustained it.
