In 1982, a spark ignited in Amsterdam. The first Thai Theravada Buddhist temple, initially located on Prinsengracht, came into being. We stand now before its successor, Tempel Buddhavihara- วัดพุทธวิหารอัมสเตอร์ดัม. This sacred space has journeyed through Amsterdam, overcoming challenges like floods, fire, and the need for more space. Its story is one of resilience and devotion. Tempel Buddhavihara- วัดพุทธวิหารอัมสเตอร์ดัม’s first home became too small as interest in Buddhism grew. In 1995, the temple relocated to a larger building near Twiske park in Den Lip. However, floods and snow in 1997 severely damaged the structure. The ground itself posed an environmental hazard. The cost of repairs proved insurmountable. The temple community made the difficult decision to sell the property and move to Papaverweg in Amsterdam-Noord. Tragedy struck again in 2006 with a devastating fire. Once more, Tempel Buddhavihara- วัดพุทธวิหารอัมสเตอร์ดัม faced rebuilding. Yet another move became necessary, this time to Zuideindestraat in Landsmeer. The founder, Phrakru Kraisornwilas (Phra Maha Theeraphan Metta Vihara), passed away in 2007. Phra Maha Chamroen Khemaweero was then appointed the new abbot. In 2012, the temple community began searching for a permanent home. The search culminated in the purchase of “De Trekschuit” building in Purmerend’s Leeghwaterpark in 2014. This purchase was made possible by generous donations and temple savings. Construction and renovations commenced, with a new chapel completed in June 2021. A grand ceremony marked this milestone in July 2023. Tempel Buddhavihara- วัดพุทธวิหารอัมสเตอร์ดัม stands as a testament to the unwavering faith of the Buddhist community in Amsterdam. Its journey, marked by perseverance and hope, continues to offer a sanctuary for spiritual practice and cultural exchange.
