“A fire so intense, they feared all of Innstadt would burn.” That’s how locals remember the blaze that engulfed the Tabakfabrik on October 25, 1948. The Tabakfabrik, nestled here in the Mülhtal, has seen a lot of history. It wasn’t always a haven for music. Originally a mill where the rhythmic grind of stones produced flour, the building took on a new life in 1705. Josef Bauer established a tobacco factory, and the air filled with the aroma of rolling cigarillos. The Tabakfabrik became a hub of activity, hands deftly crafting small cigars. The fire of 1948, though devastating, didn’t mark the end. The Tabakfabrik found new purpose. Before becoming a music venue, it served as a training ground for apprentices from the Zahnradfabrik. In the early 1990s, the Musikförderverein Passau breathed new life into the old walls. They transformed the Tabakfabrik into a vibrant space for local bands to practice and perform. The main hall, completed in 1998 and expanded between 2002 and 2005, has hosted over 200 concerts. Imagine the energy of almost 800 bands reverberating through this very space. Today, the Tabakfabrik houses 21 rehearsal rooms, a testament to Passau’s thriving music scene. The 80-square-meter hall can accommodate up to 100 guests, while the outdoor area, complete with a grill, offers a relaxed space of around 100 square meters. From the gentle flow of the Mülhtalbach to the echoes of countless melodies, the Tabakfabrik stands as a testament to Passau’s evolving history, a place where the past and present harmonize.
