“A toll-free passage since 1143” This is what Bishop Reginbert promised when he built the first Marienbrücke. Right here before us stands the latest iteration of that centuries-old commitment. The Marienbrücke isn’t just a bridge. It’s a lifeline a testament to Passau’s resilience. It connects the Altstadt and Innstadt. This is the only road bridge across the Inn for miles. Imagine the disruption if it closed. A 35km detour awaits anyone heading from the Old Town to Innstadt.

The original wooden bridge was a crucial link. It connected Passau to the east. It spared travelers the treacherous river crossing. Reginbert even compensated the St Nikola monastery for lost ferry fees. He transferred the Hartkirchen parish. He ensured free passage for everyone. The bridge became part of the historic “Road of Emperors and Kings”. This route stretched from Regensburg to Budapest.

The wooden Marienbrücke had its challenges. It was rebuilt many times. Floods and ice damaged it. City fires in 1662 and 1809 destroyed it. In 1846 a new bridge opened. This was the Ludwigsbrücke. It was made of granite and lasted for almost a century. Its foundation was ingenious. Wooden piles were driven into the riverbed. These formed a ship-shaped base for the granite piers.

Then came World War II. In the final days the Ludwigsbrücke was blown up. A retreating SS unit did the deed. A local Volkssturm group refused the order. The outer piers and four bridge sections were destroyed. American forces quickly erected a temporary bridge. This was later replaced by a Bailey bridge.

The reconstruction started immediately after the war. They used what little steel was left. They widened the piers. The new bridge was much lower than its predecessor. A concrete deck replaced the traditional steel and wood construction. The repaired bridge opened in 1947. It was renamed Marienbrücke at the suggestion of the clergy. There was even a short-lived toll. This was quickly abolished by the Bavarian parliament.

Even the Marienbrücke couldn’t escape the test of time. By 1959 weight restrictions were imposed. The bridge sagged visibly under increasing traffic. Further renovations were carried out in 1976. The steel framework was replaced. A modern steel structure was added. The current Marienbrücke is the result of many reconstructions. It is a symbol of Passau’s enduring spirit. It reflects a blend of history innovation and community resilience. Look around you. Absorb the beauty of the Inn River. Consider the engineering marvel beneath your feet. This is more than just a bridge. This is Passau’s story.
