Have you ever felt the power of history resonate through stone? Stand before St Stephen’s Cathedral in Passau. This magnificent structure is a testament to resilience and artistry. Its story begins long ago. Around 450 a church stood on this very spot in the ancient city of Batavis. Later a late Gothic cathedral was built. This was started in 1407 by Prince Bishop Georg von Hohenlohe. Construction lasted about 160 years. It was an unfinished masterpiece when it concluded between 1565 and 1570.

The construction of St Stephen’s Cathedral propelled Passau into a new era of economic social artistic and cultural growth. The scale and ambition of the project astonished contemporaries. Eneas Silvio Piccolomini the future Pope Pius II remarked on the magnificent chancel. By 1480 Passau’s cathedral building workshop ranked fourth in Europe after Cologne Strasbourg and Vienna. Master builders like Hans Krummenauer and Wolf Huber shaped the cathedral. The Frueauf and Kriechbaum families added their artistic talents.

Tragedy struck in 1662. A devastating fire nearly destroyed Passau. St Stephen’s Cathedral was gutted. Only the chancel crossing tower and transept survived. From the ashes rose a baroque marvel. The Italian architects Carlo Lurago and Giovanni Battista Carlone orchestrated the rebirth. Carlone’s heavy baroque stucco work adorns the interior.

Today St Stephen’s Cathedral stands tall. It is one of the largest Italian Baroque buildings north of the Alps. Inside you’ll find the world’s largest cathedral organ. This incredible instrument boasts 17974 pipes and 233 registers. Five individual organs combine to create a breathtaking sound. The main organ is at the main entrance. The epistle and gospel organs are on the west galleries. The choir organ is at the chancel entrance. A remote organ above the Heiliggeist-Loch sends sound waves throughout the nave.

The high altar is equally impressive. It depicts the stoning of St Stephen. This monumental artwork stands where a Gothic window once was. The organ’s largest pipe is over eleven meters long. It weighs 306 kilograms. The smallest pipes measure just six millimeters. The organ’s cables stretch over twelve kilometers.

St Stephen’s Cathedral is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to centuries of faith art and resilience. It’s a symbol of Passau’s enduring spirit. It’s a place where history echoes in every note and every stone. Let its grandeur inspire you.
