High above the Danube stands Veste Oberhaus a fortress that has witnessed centuries of history. Imagine its imposing silhouette against the Passau skyline.

Veste Oberhaus is more than just a castle. It’s a symbol of power. It’s a testament to resilience. For almost 600 years it protected the Prince-Bishops of Passau. It served as their grand residence a place of both luxury and defense. Bishop Ulrich II started its construction in 1219. He wanted a structure to showcase his newly gained power. He chose the strategic Georgsberg. Its location between the Ilz and Danube rivers provided natural protection.

The castle wasn’t built in a day. It grew over centuries. Each addition reflected changing military tactics. Each expansion showed the evolving needs of its rulers. In the 14th century a formidable wall and a five-story gate tower were added. This was in response to a siege by rebellious citizens. The subsequent connection between Oberhaus and Niederhaus further strengthened the fortifications. In 1499 under Bishop Christoph von Schachner a grand hall was constructed. Its exterior bears the Schachner coat of arms and the year 1499. The interior however was completed by Bishop Wiguleus Froschl von Marzoll.

But Veste Oberhaus wasn’t only about grandeur. It was also a prison a notorious one. It was known as the Bastille of Bavaria. This grim nickname reflects its use as a state prison for political prisoners from 1822 until the end of World War I. Even Napoleon Bonaparte used the fortress. He saw it as a strategic border bastion against Austria.

Yet even this formidable structure saw its share of sieges. Between 1250 and 1482 it was besieged five times. Twice the attackers were the citizens of Passau themselves. They revolted against the Prince-Bishops. They failed to conquer the castle. In 1741 during the War of the Austrian Succession the commandant Count von Platin surrendered without a fight. His betrayal cost him his life.

Today Veste Oberhaus stands as a museum. It houses a city museum a picture gallery and various collections. These highlight the history of East Bavaria and neighboring Bohemia and Austria. From the Battery Linde terrace you have breathtaking views of the Dreiflüsseeck. This is where the Inn Danube and Ilz rivers meet. Explore its history. Explore its secrets. Explore Veste Oberhaus.
