Have you ever seen a dam that not only harnesses the power of nature but also carries a tragic past? Here, in front of the Stauwehr Oberilzmühle, we stand on the edge of history. It’s not just a simple dam; it’s a monument to human resilience and a reminder of the dark days of the Second World War.

The Stauwehr Oberilzmühle was initially envisioned as a hydroelectric power plant, a project started in 1939 by the city of Passau. But the city was forced to hand over the project to the Nazi regime in 1942. They intended to build an underwater power plant under the supervision of Arno Fischer. The construction was tragically carried out by forced labourers, prisoners from the Mauthausen concentration camp, at a subcamp called Passau 1. They worked tirelessly until the end of the war, their lives marked by hardship and even death.

After the war ended, the city of Passau took back the project. The unfinished underwater power plant was converted into a conventional hydroelectric power station. The Stauwehr Oberilzmühle stands today as a testament to this dual history—a powerful symbol of both the horrors of war and the tenacity of human spirit. In 1965 and 1966, the dam was even raised to increase its capacity, showing how the Stauwehr Oberilzmühle has adapted and evolved over time.

It’s not just a dam; It’s a place where the past whispers to the present, where nature and humanity have left their enduring marks. Today, the Stauwehr Oberilzmühle is a place of leisure with a public beach on its western side and a clothing-optional area on the eastern side. The remnants of the war, however, still linger in the whispers of the wind. Even with the beauty of the natural landscape today, the ghosts of the past are ever-present. So, as you stand here gazing upon the serene waters of the lake, remember the weight of history that informs this place, and the resilience of those who brought us to this peaceful present.
