Across the Statenjachtbrug a gentle breeze whispers secrets of Amsterdam’s past. This unassuming viaduct in Amsterdam-Noord is more than meets the eye. It’s a vital artery connecting neighborhoods north of the BovenIJ Ziekenhuis. Without it pedestrians and cyclists would face a lengthy detour.

The Statenjachtbrug isn’t just a bridge. It’s a testament to urban planning. Built around 1976 it’s part of a system of separated traffic flows in Amsterdam-Noord. The IJdoornlaan a major thoroughfare runs above. Below is a space for pedestrians and cyclists. This clever design avoids a barrier for those needing to reach the hospital and surrounding areas. Architect Dirk Sterenberg and the Dienst der Publieke Werken designed this standard viaduct of concrete beams. Sterenberg’s work is evident across Amsterdam-Noord and even Amsterdam-Zuidoost. He created bridges in a series. The Statenjachtbrug resembles others built on similar elevated roadways.

The unique design of the Statenjachtbrug isn’t immediately obvious. Its four parapets resemble an abstract sculpture. The railings consist of yellow painted metal shields on orange balusters. A nearby sister bridge the Parlevinkerbrug further along the IJdoornlaan shares design similarities. Bus stops on either side serve the Oosterlengte area.

The Statenjachtbrug’s name is relatively recent. In 2018 Amsterdam named many bridges in main traffic routes. Most names reflect the underlying road or path. In this case the Statenjachtstraat provides the name. This street itself was named in 1965 after the state yacht of the Seven Provinces.

Initially bridges 968 and 969 were planned to support the IJdoornlaan cycle paths. Eventually however all were combined into the single Statenjachtbrug viaduct. Bridges 968 and 969 were never built. The number 968 was later reused for the Jip Golsteijnbrug.

So next time you cross the Statenjachtbrug remember this story. You’re not just crossing a bridge. You’re traversing a piece of Amsterdam’s ingenious infrastructure. You’re stepping into a story of urban planning. And you’re connecting with the history of this dynamic city.
