How did they manage to build this magnificent Stadshout-paviljoen using undried Amsterdam elm? Right here in Amstelpark stands this unique structure. The Stadshout-paviljoen is more than just a pavilion. It’s a testament to Amsterdam’s innovative spirit and its commitment to sustainability. Commissioned by the municipality it was intended as a meeting place for performances parties and even wedding photos. The design beautifully interacts with its environment. It sits beside and partially on an existing circular pond its octagonal edge reflected in the pavilion’s unique roof. Stadshout an Amsterdam organization dedicated to using wood from city trees created this marvel. The pavilion’s construction required a truly unique approach. The elm trees usually cut to 5-6.5 meters for transport needed longer beams. Instead of stacking the beams they cleverly interlocked them at the same height. This created a subtle kink in the roofline. This kink generated substantial forces within the steel framework. To account for the shrinkage of the undried wood the beams rest on steel plates. These plates allow for movement and prevent the wood from cracking. This innovative approach showcases the ingenuity of the design. The construction involved sawing the beams on an 11-meter bandsaw. Special tools were used to shape the wood. A wax treatment protected the wood’s edges. The pavilion’s construction was a truly collaborative effort. The Stadshout team showed exceptional skill in working with the wood. The precise angles and dimensions were obtained from a 3D computer model. During assembly the beams were carefully placed into the steel framework. The roof was lifted into place with slings. The V-shaped columns were added later. The whole structure was then hoisted onto the concrete podium. The final stage involved installing the roof cladding and zinc. Special attention was paid to the details particularly the ventilation and the drainage system. The resulting Stadshout-paviljoen is a stunning example of sustainable architecture. It’s a vibrant hub in Amstelpark a structure that blends seamlessly with nature. The Stadshout-paviljoen shows the beauty of using local sustainably sourced materials. It’s a celebration of craftsmanship and a testament to the city’s rich history. It stands as a symbol of Amsterdam’s dedication to both ecological responsibility and innovative design.
