Have you ever stepped inside a building that whispered stories of centuries past? Here, in the heart of Passau, stands the Staatliche Bibliothek Passau, a treasure trove of knowledge and history. Imagine, the very foundation of this library dates back to 1612 when it was established as the library of the Passau Jesuit College. It’s one of the oldest public libraries in Germany. Over time, the library witnessed both tragedy and triumph. While it almost entirely burned down during two devastating fires in 1662 and 1680, it was painstakingly rebuilt later that century, thanks to the generosity of a local bishop. The library’s grand spaces were given a magnificent makeover in the 18th century, adorned in the elegant style of the Rococo era. Its ornate stucco hall, still preserving its original glory, is a testament to that era. With the dissolution of the Jesuit order in 1773, the library became the property of the Passau prince-bishopric and was called “Prince-Episcopal Academic Library”. However, only three decades passed before the collection was transferred to Bavarian state ownership in 1803. As the Bavarian state sought to consolidate its holdings, the library at Passau became the focal point for many dissolving monastic libraries. The library’s collection swelled significantly, inheriting valuable manuscripts and rare books from the Passau Franciscan and Capuchin monasteries, the Augustinian monastery St. Nikola, the Benedictine abbey Formbach, the Premonstratensian Priory Saint Salvator near Griesbach in Rottal, and the Cistercian monastery Aldersbach near Vilshofen. Within its walls, you can almost hear the echoes of centuries gone by, whispering tales of the monks who once meticulously curated these treasures.
Today, the Staatliche Bibliothek Passau remains a vibrant hub of learning and cultural preservation. It houses a remarkable collection, encompassing 320,000 media units, including 150 manuscripts and 322 incunabula. While browsing its shelves, you might stumble upon a beautiful illustrated Bible created in 1421 or a 1474 edition of the ‘Speculum Historiale’ by Vincent of Beauvais, both considered valuable treasures within the library’s vast collection. In 2015, the library even established a Wunderkammer, a Renaissance-style cabinet of curiosities, to showcase its unique artifacts. So come inside, explore its shelves and let the stories of the Staatliche Bibliothek Passau enchant you.
