Have you ever felt the weight of history pressing down? Here before us stands St Michael’s Church a testament to Passau’s resilience. This Baroque masterpiece wasn’t always here. A predecessor stood on this very ground. It was destroyed in the devastating 1662 city fire. That fire engulfed much of Passau including the cathedral. The current St Michael’s Church is a phoenix from those ashes a rebuilding that began between 1665 and 1678.

St Michael’s is more than just a church. It’s a story of faith perseverance and architectural brilliance. Its construction was overseen by Pietro Francesco Carlone a man known for designing other notable Baroque structures. The Jesuits a religious order prominent in 17th century Passau were instrumental in its creation. They were brought to Passau in 1611 by Prince Bishop Leopold V. They initially used a temporary church in their college basement. The Jesuits’ involvement shaped the church’s purpose it served as both a place of worship and an integral part of their college.

Notice the relatively plain exterior. The bishop wanted to avoid competition with the cathedral. This simplicity however is a clever counterpoint to the lavish interior. This interior is a spectacular display of Baroque artistry. The stucco work the result of meticulous craftsmanship by Giovanni Battista Carlone and his team is breathtaking. It’s a feast for the eyes a sensory delight. The black and gold side altars crafted by local artisans Johann Seitz and Matthias Högenwald in 1678 further enhance the opulent atmosphere.

The high altar is a focal point designed in 1712. The altarpiece a painting of the fallen angel is the work of Carlo Innocenzo Carlone. The pulpit another masterpiece likely created by Joseph Matthias Götz adds to the visual richness. The church is not just about grand design it’s also about local artists. Today St Michael’s Church still stands proudly. It serves as the Studienkirche of the Gymnasium Leopoldinum. This historical landmark serves as a reminder of Passau’s history.
