“A gift from Nuremberg Protestants” That’s what the sign says about the altarpiece in St. Matthäus. This magnificent church in Passau isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to perseverance faith and architectural ingenuity.

St. Matthäus is Passau’s first Protestant church a beacon of hope built against considerable odds. For years King Ludwig I and later Bishop Heinrich von Hofstätter blocked its construction. But the unwavering dedication of Andreas Rutz and others finally prevailed.

The story of St. Matthäus is one of determined individuals. Imagine the struggle the years of resistance. Then visualize the groundbreaking on November 5 1856. The church’s architect Friedrich Bürklein a Munich court architect didn’t even charge a fee for his masterful design. He even paid his own draftsmen. Talk about devotion!

The dedication finally occurred on July 17 1859. The building itself is a marvel of neo-Gothic architecture. Bürklein’s inspiration was drawn from English country churches. The delicate arches the bright light streaming through the pointed arches these features are a testament to his skill. The wooden paneling and rounded nave ceiling even resemble railway carriages a unique and unexpected touch.

St. Matthäus is also significant as the first church designed by Bürklein. This fact often gets overlooked. He is better known for his secular works. This little church is a hidden gem showcasing his early genius. The slender spire exemplifies industrial Gothic a style reflecting the era’s industrial progress.

But St. Matthäus’ beauty isn’t limited to its architecture. The church has undergone several renovations the most recent ending in 2017. New bells were consecrated in 1952 adding to the church’s rich soundscape. A large Christ figure sculpted by Karlheinz Hoffmann adds to the church’s atmosphere. A memorial plaque honors Leonhard Kaiser a reformer burned as a heretic in 1527.

So stand here and let the story of St. Matthäus sink in. It’s a story of resilience triumph and enduring faith. It’s a story whispered in the arches echoing in the bells and revealed in every detail. This church is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living monument to the spirit of those who dared to build it. And here it still stands proudly. A symbol of the Protestant community in Passau.
