Hidden within Amsterdam’s Rivierenbuurt stands St Gabriëlkerk a church unlike any other. Its unassuming exterior belies a rich history and an interior brimming with artistic treasures.

St Gabriëlkerk is home to the Free Catholic Church of Amsterdam. It was built in 1928 by architect H A van Anrooy. His associate J L M Lauweriks a priest also contributed to its design. The building’s exterior gives an impression of inaccessibility. The entrance is hidden behind a wall. It opens into a sort of inner courtyard.

Step inside and you’ll be captivated. The warmth of untreated pine wood envelops you. Light streams through low colorful rectangular windows. Three curved wooden slat constructions divide the space. They create a central aisle flanked by side aisles. Simple wooden benches line the walls.

Your gaze is immediately drawn to the central altar. Above it is a stunning five-sided rose window. It’s a pentagram designed and crafted by Haarlem glassmaker W Bogtman. The interior’s design is by A Kurvers.

Look closely at the east wall. Near the priest’s choir you’ll find a stained-glass mosaic. It depicts the Mother of God in a praying posture. On the opposite wall above another altar is its counterpart. This mosaic shows the Archangel Gabriel. Both mosaics are by priest-artist Pam G Rueter. They add a vibrant splash of color and spirituality to the space.

St Gabriëlkerk accommodates approximately 200 people. Small low steel windows on the north and south sides contain stained glass. The designs are in the “New Style.” They are likely also by Bogtman. A concrete Latin cross embedded in the north wall serves as a striking decorative element. It breaks through the roof creating a high dormer window. A simple electronic organ sits in the nave. It is used to accompany services.

The church has faced challenges. Its roof was renewed decades ago. However the original Norwegian slate tiles were retained. The original pattern however is lost. Maintaining the building has been a constant struggle. Raising funds to renew the long-term lease was a significant hurdle. Yet the congregation perseveres. They continue to maintain this intimate and unique building.

St Gabriëlkerk is not just a place of worship. It’s a testament to faith art and perseverance. Its unique design and artistic treasures make it a true hidden gem of Amsterdam. It is a space where both the visible and invisible come together in harmony.
