Could a church tower whisper secrets of centuries past? Here at St. Bartholomäus in Passau, it certainly feels that way. St. Bartholomäus isn’t just a beautiful church. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of the Ilzstadt district. It has witnessed fires, sieges, and renovations, each layer adding to its rich tapestry of stories. St. Bartholomäus first appeared in records in 1328. Its sturdy, possibly Romanesque, tower watches over the Ilzstadt, the oldest part of the church, dating back to the 12th century. Imagine the year 1412. A devastating fire sweeps through Ilzstadt, leaving its mark on St. Bartholomäus. The church underwent a Gothic transformation, rising from the ashes. But the trials weren’t over. In 1482, during a siege, St. Bartholomäus suffered severe damage. From this turmoil emerged the sacristy and Seelenkapelle (Chapel of Souls). The 19th and 20th centuries brought further changes. In 1897, architect Johann Baptist Schott redesigned the church in the neo-Gothic style. A new vaulted ceiling replaced the flat one in the nave, and a grand entrance portal was added. Later, in 1965, the neo-Gothic elements were stripped away, replaced by modern art by Wolf Hirtreiter. Even a Lourdes grotto and an Ölbergkapelle (Mount of Olives chapel) disappeared. A major renovation took place in 2006. The church was closed for a year while the interior underwent a complete transformation by Manfred Mayerle. This cost 600,000 euros. The church reopened in 2007, looking more stunning than ever. Inside St. Bartholomäus, look up at the net vault in the choir. The diamond-shaped panels hold images of the apostles, uncovered during the 1965 renovation. They date back to around 1630. Three late Gothic stained-glass windows survived the centuries. Two, from around 1470, depict Mary with Child and St. Bartholomew. The third window, from the early 16th century, tells the controversial story of the alleged Host desecration by Passau’s Jewish community in 1477, an event that led to their expulsion and the building of the Salvatorkirche. St. Bartholomäus even held a stone believed to be the one on which sacred figures were stabbed, with the corresponding knife kept in the rectory. St. Bartholomäus stands today as a testament to resilience and transformation. It is a vibrant part of Passau’s spiritual and historical landscape.
