“Amsterdam’s patron saint watches over this church.” I want you to turn your gaze toward St. Adrianuskerk. This Roman Catholic church offers a unique story. It is a tale of faith. It is a tale of architectural ambition in Amsterdam.

St. Adrianuskerk stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s rich religious history. It reflects the city’s architectural evolution. While often overshadowed by the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, St. Adrianuskerk offers its own unique charm and significance.

The Basilica of Saint Nicholas is another prominent church in Amsterdam. It is dedicated to the city’s patron saint and protector of seafarers. This connection is fitting. Amsterdam has a strong maritime past.

St. Nicholas inside the Walls was the original name of the Basilica of Saint Nicholas. It is near the Central Station and the Oudezijds Kolk. Saint Nicholas protects sailors and prostitutes. Therefore, its location near the Red Light District is fitting. The church became a basilica in 2012. It has been a national monument since 1974.

Adrianus Bleijs designed the Basilica of Saint Nicholas in Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance styles. Construction occurred from 1884 to 1887. This was the third church in Amsterdam with that name. The first was the Oude Kerk. Iconoclasm ruined its Catholic interior. The second St. Nicholas church was a hidden church. It is now known as Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder.

The Basilica of Saint Nicholas has two towers and a large rose window. The wall paintings inside depict the life of Saint Nicholas. Jan Dunselman created them over 40 years. Pierre Elysée van den Bossche made the statues. A new altar was placed in 2012. It depicts the Miracle of Amsterdam.

From 1997 to 2001, the Basilica of Saint Nicholas underwent restoration. Catholic services are in Dutch, English, and Spanish. Gregorian vespers are sung on Sunday afternoons. The Sauer-organ is played in the summer.

The Basilica of Saint Nicholas received a relic of St. Nicholas in December 2021. It was a fragment of the saint’s rib. Egmond Abbey had held the bone since 1087.

The main facade has two towers. A rose window sits between them. The window contains a bas-relief sculpture. It depicts Christ and the four Evangelists. Bart van Hove’s sculpture of Saint Nicholas is in a niche.

The basilica has religious murals. The crown of Maximilian I is above the high altar. It symbolizes Amsterdam. The central dome has stained glass. The pulpit is on the south end of the nave. The 1889 Sauer Organ is above the main entrance. An International Organ Concert Series is held in the summer.

In 2012, St. Nicholas’ Church became a basilica minor. Mgr. A. Dupuy declared the change of status.

While the knowledge here speaks more of the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, I encourage you to discover St. Adrianuskerk’s unique story for yourself. It offers a serene space for reflection. It is a reminder of Amsterdam’s enduring faith.
