“What secrets lie beneath a web of steel?” That’s what I often wonder when I stand before the Westertoegangsspoorbrug.

Known locally as the Westelijke Onderdoorgang this bridge is a vital artery. It carries fifteen railway tracks into and out of Amsterdam Centraal Station.

The Westertoegangsspoorbrug spans the Westertoegang. This is an extension of the Singel canal and the roads flanking it. These roads converge onto De Ruijterkade. Droogbak road sits to the west of the bridge.

The original bridges opened in 1889. This coincided with the inauguration of Centraal Station. But those bridges stood further east where the Ibishotel is now located.

Those early structures succumbed to subsidence. New bridges were built slightly west between 1906 and 1909. The first section opened in 1909. The second followed in 1922. This was to accommodate the doubling of the railway line towards Singelgracht.

Until 1944, Tram line 22 looped under the bridge’s eastern section. In 1950, a bus line replaced it. Buses ran here until 1992. The Stationsplein reconstruction in 1980 added a dedicated bike route beneath the bridge.

Today bus lines 18, 21, and 22 still rumble under the western part of the Westertoegangsspoorbrug.

Once upon a time, 22 stone lions adorned the railway viaducts near Centraal Station. Sculpted in 1875, they symbolized the conflict between the city and the state. This was over the station’s location. Amsterdam wanted to keep the harbor open. The station ended up there anyway. The lions were removed and sold during later expansions.

The Westertoegangsspoorbrug is more than just steel and concrete. It is a testament to Amsterdam’s ever evolving story. It represents progress and the constant negotiation between ambition and preservation. So next time you pass under this colossal structure, remember the hidden layers beneath the surface.
