Casting a long shadow across the Spaarne River, the Spaarne spoorbrug stands as a testament to Haarlem’s enduring connection to the railway. The Spaarne spoorbrug, sometimes simply called the Spaarnebrug, isn’t just a bridge. It’s a vital artery of the Amsterdam-Haarlem railway line. This steel giant comprises a movable section and a fixed part. The movable section is a marvel of engineering, featuring a double-track bascule bridge with separate balance beams and a single-track bascule bridge. The fixed section consists of two impressive bridges, a double-track and a single-track, stretching approximately 50 meters in length. The Spaarne spoorbrug has undergone significant renovations throughout its history. In late 2015 and early 2016, the bridge’s pillars, which dated back to 1908, were replaced due to subsidence. The current Spaarne spoorbrug, opened in 1972, replaced three single-track rolling bascule bridges from 1906. These in turn had replaced the original bridge on this site. It was a single-track swing bridge with two cast-iron swivel sections. It was designed by F.W. Conrad and was considered one of the most beautiful railway bridges in the Netherlands. The Spaarne spoorbrug is more than just a steel structure. It embodies Haarlem’s progressive spirit, its rich history, and its vital link to the world beyond its borders.
