From the heart of South Holland’s capital rises the Binnenhof. This isn’t just any building complex. It’s the beating heart of Dutch politics. For centuries the Binnenhof has witnessed history unfold. Its walls have echoed with the voices of counts and kings. They’ve absorbed the weight of momentous decisions that shaped a nation.

The Binnenhof’s story begins much earlier than you might think. Long before its formal mention in 1242 as Die Haghe the area was significant. It was part of the Roman province Germania Inferior. Roman milestones discovered in 1997 testify to this. They mark distances from the Roman city Forum Hadriani near modern Voorburg. These stones silent witnesses of an empire long gone stand as a reminder of The Hague’s deep roots.

Count Floris IV of Holland already owned two residences here. He added a third around 1229 near the present-day Hofvijver. He intended to create a large castle but died before construction began. His son William II continued the project. After his election as King of the Romans he returned to The Hague. He transformed the court into a royal palace. The Ridderzaal the Knights’ Hall remains a magnificent testament to his ambition.

The Ridderzaal still sees important political events. The annual speech from the throne by the Dutch monarch takes place there. The building’s history is palpable. It speaks of power of legacy of continuous evolution. It is a tangible connection to centuries past.

The Binnenhof grew organically around this palace. It became the primary residence of the Counts of Holland in 1358. It steadily developed into an administrative center. Government institutions flocked here. Despite its growing importance The Hague never officially received city rights. This was a deliberate decision by the administration to retain control. Only in 1806 under Louis Bonaparte did The Hague gain official city status.

The Binnenhof has withstood the storms of time. It survived the Eighty Years’ War and the German occupation in World War II. It’s a symbol of resilience of continuous existence. It stands as an enduring emblem of Dutch governance. The Binnenhof’s story is one of power. It’s a story of history. It’s a story inextricably woven into the very fabric of South Holland. It’s a story that awaits your discovery.
