Navigating Amsterdam’s intricate waterways unveils hidden gems. One such treasure is the Sluis Haarlemmervaart. This unassuming lock holds a captivating story, deeply intertwined with the city’s industrial past. The Sluis Haarlemmervaart, built in 1884, stands as a testament to Amsterdam’s ingenuity and adaptability. Originally, the Haarlemmervaart served as a vital tow canal. However, in the 19th century, its function shifted. A direct connection was needed between the Haarlemmervaart and the Singelgracht to facilitate transport to the Westergasfabriek, a new gasworks. This is where our Sluis Haarlemmervaart comes into play. Its construction enabled coal barges to reach the gasworks, fueling Amsterdam’s growth. The lock effectively divides the Haarlemmervaart, creating two distinct water levels. The eastern part aligns with the city’s water level, while the western part conforms to the Rijnlands boezem, a regional water management system. This 0.20-meter difference may seem small. But it played a crucial role in Amsterdam’s water management and industrial development. The Sluis Haarlemmervaart has witnessed the passage of time. Its wooden lock gates, nestled between sturdy abutments, have been replaced several times, in 1954, 1991, and 1997. Bridges 182 and 463 stand sentinel on either side, further enhancing the lock’s character. Adjacent to the Sluis Haarlemmervaart is the Gemaal van de Overbraker Binnenpolder. This pumping station, along with its charming sluiswachterswoning (lock keeper’s house), shares a rich history with the lock. Together, they represent the ingenuity of Dutch water management. In recognition of their historical significance, both the Sluis Haarlemmervaart and the pumping station with its dwelling were designated as national monuments in 2003. They stand as proud reminders of Amsterdam’s industrial heritage. They serve as silent witnesses to the city’s constant evolution.
